Senior Mechanical Design Engineer

We are looking for a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join our team and help create the world’s first fully automated, cloud-enabled, molecular biology lab.


This position will own numerous projects, help build the tools to enable industrial-scale molecular biology research, and bring automation to genome engineering.

Location: Redwood City, CA (applicants local to the Bay Area only).

 

Responsibilities

 

  • Technical leadership in mechanical design and active fluidics development supporting a team of mechanical and instrument engineers in building liquid transfer and control systems ranging from microliters to litres
  • Own the architecture of core scientific instrument subsystems and contribute to factory scale process piping design in an industrial and laboratory automation setting
  • Characterize and optimize the performance of highly complex fluid control instrumentation using best engineering practices and data driven decision making


Requirements

 

  • 5+ years of experience in mechanical or systems design
  • 2+ year of experience in industrial automation, instrument design, or systems engineering
  • You have designed, built, tested and deployed complex automated instruments
  • You have had a very high level of ownership of the projects you worked on
  • You have designed and built in an industrial context where reliability matters
  • You have an extensive portfolio of badass projects to show us
  • You have a knack for cross-disciplinary problem-solving
  • You know when to outsource and when you need to build it yourself
  • You love to work in a fast-paced, innovative and collaborative environment
  • You are skilled at methodical self-management and project-management
  • You have a great sense of humor :-)
  • BS/MS in Mechanical Engineering and related work experience


Qualifications

 

  • SolidWorks, SolidWorks, SolidWorks
  • Demonstrated mastery of pneumatics and fluid control
  • Experience with applied material science (chemical compatibility)
  • Ability to characterize and optimize complex system with best engineering practices (DOE, CPM, CTQ, FMEA etc.)
  • Proven experience with complex projects using external design resources and contract manufacturers
  • Familiarity with scientific instrument control, laboratory automation and liquid handling


Bonus Qualifications

 

  • Experience working with complex scientific applications
  • Experience with active microfluidics and control systems
  • Familiarity with Design Controls process and environment (ISO, cGMP etc.)
  • Ability to generating wiring diagrams as well as P&ID (SolidWorks Electrical)
  • Python programming skills
  • Motion and Industrial controls experience 
  • Quick turn / rapid prototyping experience
  • Previous experience in Biotech
  • ECAD experience - Altium Design, KiCAD
  • CAM experience - HSMWorks
  • CNC experience - Haas & Datron
