VP of Engineering in Operations

Synthego is looking for a VP of Engineering in Operations to join our team and help create the world’s first fully automated cloud-enabled high throughput biology and cell engineering lab.

This position will own numerous projects and help lead the development and deployment of tools and systems to enable industrial-scale molecular biology research, and bring automation to genome engineering.

 

Responsibilities

 

Lead and manage a diverse set of engineering groups within the Operations team that include Facility Software, Commercial Software, and Facility Hardware.
 

SOFTWARE ENGINEERING

  • Lead a Facility Software team in the development and deployment of software to run all of our instrumentation and 24/7 facility. This includes all proprietary and off-the-shelf hardware.
  • Manage Facility Software on all projects related to monitoring, scheduling, optimization, analysis and KPI’s.
  • Manage our Commercial Software team in the development and deployment of customized and third party software for selling all products and services. Manage a team that oversees our web store and Integration of that store with all other in-house systems including ERP, MRP, CRM and others.
  • Build and manage customer facing software tools

 

HARDWARE ENGINEERING

  • Lead a Hardware Engineering team in the development, prototyping, fabrication and maintenance of all hardware needed to run our 24/7 automated manufacturing facility.
  • Design and build custom developed instrumentation. Work with contract manufacturers on the timely, cost-effective fabrication of this hardware.
  • Integrate 3rd party instrumentation. Work with VP of Manufacturing Operations and Executive team to specify and plan overall manufacturing instrumentation plan.

 

NEW PRODUCT INTRODUCTION

 

 

  • Work with a separate R&D team at Synthego to deliver the introduction of new products and services through the final stages of a robust and efficient NPI process into fully operational environment.

 

OTHER

 

 

  • Engineering Program Management - Ensure that all projects are delivered in a timely, cost effective manner utilizing Agile practices and best in class project management
  • Manage budgets and assure program delivery across a broad spectrum of complex program initiatives
  • Support key root cause investigations and implement corrective and preventative actions
  • Operate under the ISO13485 environment

 

Requirements 

 

  • 10+ years running engineering projects
  • Deep understanding of automation systems, mechanical and control principles and automation software
  • Posses a start-up mentality
  • Experience with Python, JavaScript, Django, AngularJS, NoSQL, RDBMS as well as other languages and platforms. Fluency with multiple environments including Linux.
  • Experience with SolidWorks, P&ID and other platforms necessary to lead Hardware Engineering projects
  • Experience managing Electrical Engineering and Embedded Systems projects
  • Experience working with or at an automated manufacturing facility
  • BS/MS/PhD in engineering discipline such as Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering

 

Bonus Qualifications

 

  • Experience in chemistry or biology applications
  • Familiarity with genome engineering
