Electrical/Instrumentation Engineer

Synthego is looking for an Electrical and Instrumentation Engineer to join our team and help create the world’s first fully automated, cloud-enabled, molecular biology lab.

This position will own numerous projects, help build the tools and systems to enable industrial-scale molecular biology research, and bring automation to genome engineering.

The focus of this role is on PCB design, prototyping & debugging mechatronic systems, and writing instrument level code in Python.

 

Responsibilities

  • PCB design (schematics and layout) + PCB assembly
  • Writing Python code to conduct functional tests & proof of concepts with first articles and prototypes
  • In-depth knowledge of best practices with regard to PCB design
  • Lead electronic systems design and architecture
  • Contribute to improvements in electronic system design processes
  • Debugging/modifying electronic components, circuits, and existing instrument level code
  • Being the primary point of contact / educator / source of expertise for all things considered Electrical Engineering
  • Specifying scalable electric architecture for Synthego’s industrial automation needs
  • Generating electrical wiring diagrams for automated instrumentation

 

Requirements

  • 2+ years of experience in PCB design
  • 2+ years of experience with programming experience (preferably Python)
  • BS/MS in Mechatronics or EE and related work experience
  • Fluent with git version control, hierarchical design, and object-oriented programming
  • Fluent with linux command line tools
  • Familiarity with circuit design with filters, operational amplifiers, integrated circuits, transistors, and digital to analog converters
  • Familiarity with communication protocol implementation (like CAN, USB, SPI, I2C, Ethernet, RS232)
  • Familiarity with analog, digital, or mixed-signal design fundamentals
  • Familiarity with cable harness design, characterization, and calibration of sensors
  • Soldering skills / rapid iteration prototyping & breadboarding
  • You have had a very high level of ownership in the projects you worked on
  • You have a knack for cross-disciplinary problem-solving
  • You are a fast-paced self-starter who contributes innovative ideas
  • You love to work in a fast-paced, innovative and collaborative environment
  • You have good communication skills

  • Mechanical Design Skills (SolidWorks)
  • Comfortable writing embedded microcontroller firmware and FPGA “glue-logic”
